In order to use any third party GPS software, the CG1-RADIO board must appear to the host CPU as a pair of serial interfaces (UART COM ports). The available EKF drivers, by interacting with the local on-board i960 firmware, enforce this behaviour.

Currently, there are Windows NT 4 / 2000 and Linux drivers available for download.

The intelligent mode of the CG1-RADIO allows to run user specific tasks locally, without charging the host system. EKF supports its customers by offering turn-key ready firmware. EKF recommends IxWorks (WindRiver) based solutions and tools for its i960 equipped boards, requiring a Tornado development system. In addition, there are stand-alone tools available, beginning with the MON960 monitor.

The Jupiter receiver module communicates likewise using the Rockwell Binary format for exchanging commands and data (this is the proprietary way), or by the NMEA 0183 ASCII standard (this is the most common solution). Since the GPS SA (Selective Availability) has been deactivated, the additional protocol RTCM SC-104 for sharpening positioning data has lost most of its importance.

The aims of the CG1-RADIO are twofold:

  • to get worldwide the accurate time and date for synchronizing the host system clock (presumable of importance in any system that is used to record time stamped data, or starts scheduled processes)
  • to get positioning data (presumable interesting in mobile systems)

Select the application program that fits your needs best. The CG1-RADIO can be used together with a wide range of free and commercial Windows based software. As a starting point, please visit the site of Peter Bennett.

Please note that EKF did not test all of the programs mentioned and therefore cannot be made responsible in case of malfunctioning software. As a reference, EKF has tested Map&Guide, a well known commercial application, for interaction with the CG1-RADIO under NT 4. As examples for Linux, kgps and gpssync have been tested by EKF. These are tools for displaying the time data stream or synchronizing the system clock by the received GPS UTC time data.
